Clyde Park, MT

Clyde Park rests in the Shields River valley between Montana’s Bridger Range and Crazy Mountains. The settlement began in the 1870s as Sunnyside, established by Texas cattlemen who brought herds to the valley for grazing. A post office opened in 1887, and the Clyde Park name eventually took over after the Sunnyside and Clyde Park offices were combined. The Northern Pacific Railway reached town with a branch line in 1909, and Clyde Park incorporated in 1912. A major fire in 1919 erased much of the early business district, but the town continued.

Ranching and farming still shape the valley, with cattle operations and grain fields spread around the town. Clyde Park’s school community is part of Shields Valley Public Schools, which also serves nearby Wilsall. The town’s annual Old Settlers Days keeps the pioneer chapter in view through a parade, art show, and other gatherings. G Bar M Ranch adds another thread, linking the area’s working ranch landscape with its long-running dude-ranch tradition. With 332 residents in 2020, Clyde Park remains small enough for the river valley, grain country, and surrounding ranges to define the town at a glance.
