Coahoma, TX

Coahoma sits in Howard County along Interstate 20, ten miles northeast of Big Spring. It began under names including Signal Mountain and Signal Mountain Station, then grew after the Texas and Pacific Railway arrived in 1881. The rail line made Coahoma a retail trade center and shipping point, while the 1926 oil strike changed the town’s commercial focus toward machinery and oilfield supplies. A school opened in 1891, and the town’s post office followed as the community took shape around the tracks and the highway.

Today Coahoma’s location on the Ports to Plains corridor keeps it connected to Big Spring and the wider West Texas economy. Farming, ranching, oil and gas, local schools, town services, and small businesses fill out daily life, while Howard College’s countywide service area gives residents a nearby community-college connection. The town is close enough to Big Spring for larger errands and medical care, yet its own streets still carry the scale of a place built to ship crops, equipment, and livestock. Coahoma’s work has changed with the region, but transportation remains the thread running through it.
