Coal Hill, AR

In 2020, Coal Hill had 820 residents in western Johnson County, along U.S. 64. The name points straight to the geology: coal was discovered nearby in the 1840s, and the Little Rock and Fort Smith Railroad later gave local mines a way to reach market. Coal Hill was incorporated in 1880 and grew around the railroad, depot, stores, and the Ouita Coal Company. By the 1880s it was one of Arkansas’s leading coal-producing places, with a large rail yard and a workforce drawn from across the region.

The coal boom also carried a painful history. In 1888, a state investigation examined abuse of leased convict labor in Coal Hill’s mines, part of the record that led to the system’s abolition. Mining declined after the early 1920s as county production fell, and the town shrank with the industry’s rise and retreat. Today, Coal Hill remains a Johnson County city with U.S. 64 through its center, Westside School District, and a rural setting near Clarksville. The old coal-town name still tells you what made this place matter.
