Cobden, IL

Cobden is a Union County village in southern Illinois, founded in 1857 as the Illinois Central Railroad was being built through the area. The downtown circles the old rail line, and Old U.S. Route 51 runs straight through town. Orchards, vegetable farms, and wineries fill the country around Cobden, with the village sitting inside the Shawnee Hills wine region south of Carbondale. The name honors British politician Richard Cobden, who visited in 1859.

Cobden’s best-known local nickname comes from its high-school basketball team. The Appleknockers, a name referring to traveling farm laborers, reached the 1964 Illinois state tournament and turned an unusual mascot into a lasting piece of village culture. The Cobden Peach Festival arrives each August, while nearby orchards, wine trails, small shops, and restaurants give the warm-season landscape its rhythm. Cobden’s Main Street also fills with visitors during the harvest season. Cobden is a rail-ringed farming village where peaches, apples, grapes, school sports, and the old U.S. highway all share the same narrow valley.
