Coinjock, NC

Coinjock is a Currituck County census-designated place along U.S. 158 and Caratoke Highway, with the North River to the west and Currituck Sound to the east. The name is often traced to an Indigenous word for a place of blueberry swamps, which fits the wet coastal landscape. Coinjock's transportation story changed when the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal opened on January 9, 1859, linking Albemarle Sound with Chesapeake Bay. Five miles of the canal run through North Carolina at Coinjock as part of the Intracoastal Waterway, bringing commercial boats and cruising yachts past the community.

Coinjock Marina and Restaurant has served local diners and traveling boaters since 1978, with waterfront views, seafood, and its famously oversized prime rib. The Coinjock Ruritan Club's Currituck Wildlife Festival revisits the county's waterfowl and hunting traditions. Older buildings add another layer: the Coinjock Colored School, a historic Rosenwald school, is listed on the National Register, and the county's inventory includes the c. 1890 Coinjock School, a former government light keeper's house, and Coinjock Baptist Church, whose congregation dates to the 1890s. Coinjock's daily map is still made of water, highway, church, historic schools, farms, and the marina's steady stream of visitors.
