Colbert, OK

Colbert sits in Bryan County near the Red River, in a town named for a Chickasaw family whose influence stretches across the history of southern Indian Territory. Benjamin Franklin Colbert received permission from the Chickasaw Nation in 1853 to run a ferry across the river, and the crossing served travelers on the Texas Road. His ferry later became a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route, with Colbert’s house providing food and shelter for stage passengers. The town that grew nearby carries that river-crossing history in its name.

Modern Colbert is a small Oklahoma town with city hall, local streets, schools, and the larger Red River region just south. The old ferry site lies southeast of town, near the border with Texas, while the present community is part of a corridor between Durant and the river crossings. Colbert incorporated in 1939, but its history also belongs to the Chickasaw story: the family supplied leaders and landholders during a period when roads and ferries mattered as much as formal towns. The result is a place with a compact present and a long geographic reach.
