The South Branch of the Rahway River crosses Colonia's largest public gathering place, the 182-acre Merrill Park. The county park combines reservable picnic groves and playgrounds with baseball, softball, football, soccer, basketball, and tennis facilities; a paved path also follows parts of the grounds. Colonia itself is an unincorporated section of Woodbridge Township, so its shared spaces come through county and township systems rather than a separate municipal center. The census-designated place recorded 18,609 residents in 2020. Its 2020-2024 profile is strongly owner-occupied: 89 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied value was $493,100, and monthly mortgage costs were $3,130, compared with median gross rent of $2,047.
