Columbia, CA

Columbia is a small community of around 2,600 people in the Sierra Nevada foothills, just three miles north of Sonora on Highway 49. It is best known for Columbia State Historic Park, a preserved 1850s Gold Rush district where brick storefronts, wooden boardwalks, and stagecoaches are part of the daily scenery. Outside the park area, the town consists mostly of quiet residential roads winding through pine and oak trees, offering plenty of space and foothill privacy.

Day-to-day life is straightforward and relaxed. Families have a local elementary school right in town, and Columbia College sits just up the road. For major grocery runs, hospitals, and larger stores, residents make the easy ten-minute drive down to Sonora. Like much of the Sierra foothills, summers are hot and dry, so wildfire preparedness and defensible space are standard routines for homeowners. It makes for an easygoing foothill town that pairs historic Gold Rush character with quick access to everyday necessities.
