Columbus, KS

Columbus is Cherokee County’s seat in southeast Kansas, about 15 miles south-southwest of Pittsburg. The first settlement dates to 1868, and the post office followed in 1869. Railroad lines from the St. Louis–San Francisco and Missouri, Kansas & Texas systems made Columbus a junction town, while coal, lead, and zinc mining gave the surrounding county a working-industrial edge. The early business list was broad for a small county seat: grain elevators, flour mills, machine shops, a canning factory, brickmaking, and trade in farm products. Today the courthouse and City Hall still give Columbus its civic center, with county government on Maple Street alongside city services. The city’s history reads cleanly through those layers: county seat, rail junction, and a town built to handle the region’s crops and minerals.
