Comanche, OK

Comanche is a Stephens County city in southwest Oklahoma, set among rolling prairie, oil fields, ranches, farms, pecan orchards, and timbered areas. Its history reaches back to Indian Territory: the area became part of the Chickasaw Nation, and the community was identified as Comanche, Indian Territory, until Oklahoma statehood in 1907. Parts of the old historic trail remain visible, tying the present city to the routes and territorial changes that came before it.

Waurika Lake, a 10,000-acre reservoir eight to ten miles southwest, gives the area its largest recreational horizon, with boating, fishing, camping, hunting, hiking, and shoreline gatherings through the seasons. In town, Comanche Public Schools operate elementary, middle, and high school campuses and add the daily rhythm of classes, sports, and community events. Oil, ranching, agriculture, pecan growing, and lake recreation all share the same regional map. Comanche's character comes from that blend: a small Oklahoma city with Chickasaw-era history, working land, a lake nearby, and schools at its center.
