About Connoquenessing

Connoquenessing is a Butler County borough with a name that locals inherit from the creek running through the valley south of town. Peter McKinney settled here in the 1790s, and the place cycled through McKinney's Tavern, Petersburg, and Petersville before taking its current name in 1871; borough incorporation came in 1898. The late-1800s oil boom left a mark too, with rigs and small oil shanties spreading across nearby farms. Today the borough is compact, tied to the Butler Area School District and Connoquenessing Park, while the creek keeps the geography legible. It is western Pennsylvania in a handful of layers: pioneer stop, renamed village, oil patch, and creek valley.
