Conrad, IA

Conrad is a Grundy County city whose story starts with Wolf Creek and the railroad. J.W. Conrad settled near the creek in 1853, and the Chicago & North Western line reached the valley in 1880. The town took its name from nearby Conrad’s Grove, itself tied to early settler John Conrad. A fire in 1894 swept through nearly all of downtown; the brick buildings that followed give the center a more deliberate, rebuilt feel than the town’s early frame beginnings.

These days, Conrad’s everyday map is easy to read: North Main Street, the library, the school campus, and the fields beyond town. BCLUW puts both its elementary and high school here, while middle school is in Union, linking Conrad to the wider district. The public library fills in the after-school and community side with book clubs, family programs, and local events. Most days, that map is still enough. It’s a small Iowa place with a railroad-shaped downtown and a school system shared across several nearby communities.
