Cookson, OK

Cookson is a Cherokee County census-designated place in the Cookson Hills, the southern reach of the Boston Mountains and the southern extension of the Ozark Plateau. The hills are timbered, cut by streams, and marked by elevation changes that make the landscape feel larger than the small community itself. The post office opened in 1895, and the place took the name Cookson after its first postmaster, John H. Cookson.

The wider Cookson Hills sit within the historic Cherokee Nation’s Tahlequah District, and that history remains part of the regional map. Greenleaf Lake, Lake Tenkiller, and nearby state parks made tourism increasingly important during the twentieth century, alongside cattle ranching and limited agriculture. The hills make straight lines rare, and distance matters as much as the community name. Cookson is a rural Oklahoma place where the roads connect a named community to hills, lakes, and Cherokee County’s larger outdoor landscape. Its scale is small, but the country around it is not.
