Copper Harbor, MI

Copper Harbor sits at the northern tip of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, right where U.S. Highway 41 ends at the edge of Lake Superior. With fewer than 150 year-round residents, it is the northernmost community in the state, with roots dating back to the copper mining rush of the 1840s. Grant Township's building, the post office, and the community hall on Gratiot Street handle municipal business and double as casual gathering spots for neighbors. Summer brings added energy as travelers arrive to catch the Isle Royale Queen IV ferry across to the national park, but once the season winds down, Copper Harbor returns to a calm, self-reliant rhythm. Full-service grocery stores, hospitals, and larger schools are roughly an hour south in Houghton and Calumet, so moving here requires some advance planning and an independent streak.
