Corn, OK

Corn is a Washita County town thirteen miles northeast of Cordell, built by German-Russian Mennonite families who settled along the Washita country in the 1890s. The community was first known as Korn, and the name was anglicized to Corn in 1918 during World War I. The Washita Mennonite Brethren Church organized in 1893, and the post office moved into the present town in 1903. Wheat, cotton, sorghum, barley, rye, and peanuts still make the surrounding agricultural map easy to read.

Education has always been part of Corn’s local center. Mennonite Brethren churches established Korn Bible Academy in 1902, and Corn Bible Academy continues as a grades 7–12 Christian school serving western Oklahoma. The town office holds board meetings, while the church, school, post office, and farm roads keep the old settlement pattern visible. Corn is a place where a German word for grain became an Oklahoma town name, and where Mennonite faith, wheat-country work, and school traditions still sit close together.
