About Corning

Corning is one of Clay County’s two seats, a western Arkansas city just west of the Black River on U.S. 62. The first settlement, Hecht City, grew around a lumber mill run by brothers Levi and Solomon Hecht; the community moved to its present site when the Cairo and Fulton Railroad surveyed the route in 1871. The railroad was completed the next year, and the name changed to Corning in 1873 for railroad engineer H. D. Corning. The October Harvest Festival keeps the city’s agricultural and equipment history visible. Corning is a county-seat city built out of timber, rail, and river-bottom country.
