Cortland, IN

Cortland is a Jackson County CDP along State Road 258. Its local record includes a high school, a depot photographed around 1920, Union Church, Stahl’s Grocery, and McKain’s Store—institutions that place education, rail service, worship, and everyday trade at the center of the community’s history. An 1851 Indiana mail route already passed through Cortland, showing the settlement’s place in the county’s early overland network.
