Corvallis, MT

Corvallis is a Ravalli County census-designated place in the Bitterroot Valley, with 1,125 residents at the 2020 census. Its name came with settlers from Corvallis, Oregon, but the local story is older than the name: a wagon train from Missouri reached the valley in 1864, and some of those travelers returned after deciding the Bitterroot was better farming country than Oregon. The first school district in the area was organized in 1867, giving Corvallis a long educational thread.

Corvallis School District 1 still teaches students from kindergarten through twelfth grade, and its history begins with parlor schools and a one-room log cabin before the present campus. The Bitterroot River drains the valley, while the road network connects Corvallis to Stevensville, Hamilton, and the rest of Ravalli County. It is a small place, but the school, valley, and settler story give it a clear center: Corvallis grew from families deciding to stay in the Bitterroot and then building the institutions that made staying possible.
