Corydon, IA

Corydon is Wayne County's seat, laid out and platted in 1851 on the county's early road network. A local founding story says Judge Seth Anderson won the right to rename Springfield Corydon in a poker game, after his old hometown of Corydon, Indiana. County offices and the courthouse still give the town its civic center, with U.S. Highway 2 carrying the route past the eastern side of town and toward the surrounding farm country. The name and the county-seat role are both older than Iowa's modern highway map, and both remain visible in the town's daily geography.

The Prairie Trails Museum makes the wider county story tangible. Its brick building holds about 25,000 artifacts in five galleries covering more than 21,000 square feet, and its exhibits include a Mormon Trail section; a barn adds farm antiques. Wayne Community Schools supplies the everyday school connection, the Prairie Trails Family Aquatic Center gives summer recreation a local address, and the Wayne County Freedom Rock sits on Franklin Street. Corydon's character comes from that mix of county business, agricultural memory, and places that keep the region's routes and stories in town.
