Council Grove, KS

Council Grove is Morris County's seat in the Flint Hills, where the Neosho River and the old Santa Fe Trail meet. The 2020 census counted 2,140 residents. The name reaches back to August 1825, when U.S. commissioners and Osage leaders negotiated passage for travelers across Osage territory. The agreement opened a route that became one of the country's great overland trade roads, but the story did not end with wagon trains: Kaw people later lived here under a reservation arrangement, and the Kaw Mission preserves that later chapter in the town's landscape. Council Grove began forming as a permanent settlement around 1847, with Seth Hays's trading post.

Main Street follows the trail's old line, and the historic district keeps the trail-era buildings close together: Hays House, the Last Chance Store, the old post-office oak stump, and Kaw Mission. The Neosho Riverwalk traces the water crossing that helped make the place a stopping point. Council Grove High School belongs to Morris County USD 417, while U.S. 56 connects the county seat to Topeka and the rest of eastern Kansas.
