Courtland, MS

Courtland is a Panola County town in north Mississippi, with 470 residents in the 2020 census. It was incorporated on March 30, 1871, and grew as a railroad and cotton-trade community in the agricultural country south of Batesville. Its streets hold older homes, Main Street businesses, and the tracks that still run through the daily scene. Cotton fields, tracks, and highway connections still give the place a clear relationship with Panola’s farming map. The nearby farm roads still feed into that rail corridor.

Courtland was first called Randolph’s Crossing, then became a trade center when the railroad arrived. South Panola School District serves the Panola County side, while local organizations and annual activities keep the square and Main Street connected to the surrounding farms. The railroad, which once carried cotton and people into the wider Delta market, still passes through town. Courtland is a Mississippi town where a former crossing became a rail town, a cotton center, and a small community with its own civic rhythm.
