Cowan, TN

Cowan is a Franklin County city at the western foot of the Cumberland Plateau, where U.S. 41A crosses the CSX railroad and Boiling Fork Creek runs toward the Elk River. The city developed as a railroad town in the mid-19th century, and the restored 1904 passenger depot remains downtown as the Cowan Railroad Museum. That gives Cowan a clear local center: highway, active freight mainline, depot, and the ridges that fold into Hawkins and Keith Coves. The downtown depot remains the place where the city's railroad past is easiest to see.

The museum is an official Tennessee State Railroad Museum and keeps the depot's railroad story in regular use during its seasonal operating months. U.S. 41A connects Cowan with Winchester and the Tims Ford Lake area, so the city's daily map extends from the depot toward Franklin County's larger services and recreation. Cowan is a plateau-edge town whose present streets still follow the meeting of rail, road, creek, and depot.
