Coyote Flats, TX

Coyote Flats is a Johnson County city where the 2020 census counted 345 residents. It lies six miles east of Cleburne, four miles south of Keene, and seven miles southwest of Alvarado, in the rural-suburban belt south of the Dallas–Fort Worth region. The city is young by Texas standards: residents organized it in 2010 after an annexation dispute with Keene, then voted 76–11 to incorporate.

That origin story still shapes the city’s map. Twenty-five residents petitioned for incorporation, and John Barnett became the first mayor later that year. Coyote Flats keeps a small municipal boundary between larger neighboring cities, while local roads lead toward Cleburne, Keene, and Alvarado for schools, shopping, work, and county services. The name sounds western, but the day-to-day setting is a mix of open land, homes, and growing North Texas road traffic. Coyote Flats is a place built by residents who wanted their own town line. The incorporation came from a local fight over who would draw the boundary.
