Crested Butte, CO

Tucked into the Rocky Mountains at nearly 9,000 feet, Crested Butte is a charming former mining town turned year-round outdoor haven. With around 1,600 permanent residents, it has managed to keep its authentic mountain character alive through colorful Victorian storefronts along Elk Avenue and a laid-back, welcoming community. Winter revolves around the steep slopes of Crested Butte Mountain Resort, while summers bring world-class mountain biking and endless alpine wildflowers. Highway 135 runs straight down the valley, connecting town to the larger hub of Gunnison about thirty minutes south.

Daily life here centers around the outdoors, with hiking trails, the local Nordic Center, and Coal Creek accessible right from town. Families are served by the highly rated Crested Butte Community School, which educates local kids from kindergarten through twelfth grade on a single central campus. While the town itself feels pleasantly tucked away from big-city hustle, everyday essentials, local restaurants, and community events fill the valley. For commercial flights and bigger box stores, residents make the easy drive down to Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport and neighboring Gunnison.
