Creston, IL

Creston is an Ogle County village whose name comes from a claim about elevation: early residents believed it sat on the highest point of land between Chicago and the Mississippi River. The village was incorporated in 1872 after being established in 1869, and its streets still sit inside the broad farm country north of Rochelle. Creston Community Consolidated School District 161 and Rochelle Township High School District 212 serve the area, tying the village to a larger school network than its size might suggest.

The name is the memorable part, but the location does practical work too. Creston is close enough to Rochelle for larger shopping, jobs, and services while keeping the feel of a small Ogle County settlement surrounded by fields and two-lane roads. The village's history is one of local government, school connections, and the gradual shift from nineteenth-century agricultural settlement to a modern commuter landscape. The 2020 census counted 627 residents, down from 662 in 2010. Creston remains a modest place with a strong bit of Illinois geography in its name: a town that wanted to be remembered as a high point between two major destinations.
