Crook City, SD

Crook City is a Lawrence County place along the old Black Hills gold-rush routes, named for General George Crook’s 1876 camp. County leaders first chose it as the seat of Lawrence County, but opposition from other communities forced the first board meeting to adjourn to Deadwood, which became the permanent county seat. For a place that is now a small rural settlement and census-designated place, Crook City carries an outsized piece of the county’s early political and mining history.

Today the area is mostly open country, scattered homes, ranch land, and roads linking Whitewood, Deadwood, Spearfish, and Sturgis. Crook City Road and nearby Crook Mountain keep the old name in the Black Hills landscape, while school boundaries split between Spearfish and Meade districts. The gold-rush boom is gone, but Deadwood’s jobs, tourism, and services remain close enough to shape daily routines. Crook City feels like a place where the main evidence of its former importance is in the roads, names, cemeteries, and county records that still point back to the camp.
