Crooksville, OH

Crooksville grew out of timber, clay, coal, and the railroad. Jacob Reed's farm sat along Moxahala Creek, and a rail spur reached the property in 1856, giving the settlement a freight stop called Reed Station. Small kilns followed, producing the seasonal "bluebird potteries" that fired from spring through fall. Joseph Crooks later secured a post office, but "Reed Post Office" was already taken, so the department suggested Crooksville. Hull Pottery put the village on the wider ceramics map in the twentieth century, and the Crooksville-Roseville Pottery Festival keeps that material history visible. The short version: the creek supplied the setting, the railroad moved the goods, and local clay gave the village its signature.
