Crosbyton, TX

Crosbyton is the seat of Crosby County on the Llano Estacado, about two miles west of Blanco Canyon and along U.S. 82. The 2020 census counted 1,492 residents. The highway runs 24 miles east to Dickens and 38 miles west to Lubbock, placing the county seat in a broad West Texas road-and-farm network. Wheat, grain sorghum, cotton, and hogs have all figured in the local economy, while the canyon marks the edge where flat plain gives way to deeper country.

Zina Lamar's Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum opened in 1958 and now holds more than 45,000 artifacts, including material tied to ranching, farming, Comanche history, and the 1871 Battle of Blanco Canyon. In the 1970s, Texas Tech and federal researchers built a 65-foot solar dish in Crosbyton, then the world's largest single solar collector. Crosbyton Consolidated Independent School District, the courthouse square, the museum, and U.S. 82 keep the county seat's practical and historical sides together. Crosbyton is a place where a canyon, a museum, and a piece of solar history sit within the same town story.
