About Crownpoint
Crownpoint is an unincorporated Navajo Nation community on New Mexico 371 in central McKinley County, along the Trail of the Ancients. It is the administrative center of the Eastern Navajo Agency, so tribal offices are part of the town's everyday map. The high-plateau setting matters too: Crownpoint sits around 6,851 feet, and the land drains toward the Chaco River. This is a place where a long highway and a large tribal government meet in one high-desert community.
Navajo Technical University gives Crownpoint an educational role that reaches well beyond a typical small settlement. It began in 1979 as the Navajo Skills Center, grew into a technical college, and became the first university established on the Navajo Nation in 2013. The Crownpoint Rug Auction adds a monthly cultural and trading rhythm, bringing Navajo weavers and buyers together around work made across the region. Local schools are part of Gallup-McKinley County Schools, while the university, agency offices, and highway organize the community's broader daily connections.
