Crows Landing, CA

Crows Landing is a small Stanislaus County community about 20 miles southwest of Modesto, first established as a landing on the San Joaquin River. County history credits Isaac Crow with the boat landing that gave the place its name; the original settlement stood by the river before the railroad shifted the community to its present site. Dairying and grain farming became major local activities, and the community remains tied to the open agricultural landscape of western Stanislaus County.

West of town, the former Crows Landing Air Facility adds an unusual aerospace chapter. Commissioned in 1942 as an auxiliary field for Naval Air Station Alameda, it later supported the Navy, Coast Guard, and NASA before closing as a military facility. NASA assumed control in 1994, and Stanislaus County is now reusing the 1,528-acre property as The Landing, a planned industrial business park and public-use airport around the preserved runway. That old river crossing and the airfield's long afterlife give Crows Landing two distinct local maps: one shaped by farms and water, the other by flight, engineering, and county-led redevelopment.
