Crystal Falls, MI

Crystal Falls is Iron County's seat in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula, spread across hilly ground along the Paint River. Its name came from a nearby icy waterfall, but the city's early growth came from iron mining, timber, and the railroad that reached the area in 1882. The Iron County Courthouse rises at the west end of Superior Avenue, giving the main business street a castle-like landmark and a view across the valley. The city was platted in 1881, right as mines and rail connections were reshaping the region.

Crystal Falls still has an unusually hands-on municipal story. The city owns a hydroelectric plant that supplies part of local demand, and Runkle Lake Park adds a beach, fishing, camping, and a playground beside the water. The Crystal Theater brings performing arts into the county-seat setting, while Forest Park schools serve area students. Winter and summer both matter here: snow, river hills, lake days, and long drives across Iron County all shape the calendar. Crystal Falls feels like a courthouse town with mining bones, forest roads, and enough local infrastructure to keep its own lights on.
