Crystal Lake's name remains part of the city's summer routine: the separate Crystal Lake Park District operates two public swimming beaches on the lake. In 2026, Main Beach opened from late May through Labor Day on a regular and then weekend schedule, while West Beach ran daily through early August; both admitted residents and nonresidents. The lake sits southwest of downtown in a city that developed from two 19th-century communities. Crystal Lake is the most populous city in McHenry County and part of the Chicago metropolitan area, about 45 miles northwest of Chicago. Its population was 40,269 at the 2020 census. The independently elected Park District gives the community a recreation system distinct from city government. Its 140-acre Veteran Acres Park combines active facilities with natural areas: ballfields and courts share the property with a splash pad, sled hills, walking paths, a boardwalk, fishing pier, and the district's Nature Center.

Trails continue through Sterne's Woods and Wingate Prairie, an Illinois Nature Preserve, and connect with the regional Prairie Trail. The combination supports swimming in summer, environmental programs throughout the year, and cross-country skiing or sledding when snow allows. Two Metra stations within city limits add a regional connection. The city operates commuter parking at the downtown station, while Metra operates the Pingree Road station. Downtown also contains small shops and Raue Center for the Arts at 26 North Williams Street. Raue's 2026 calendar mixed touring concerts and comedy with open-mic nights, improv, classes, and youth-theater productions from its school for the arts. The beaches, Veteran Acres, rail stations, and theater give different parts of Crystal Lake recurring public uses rather than concentrating local activity in one commercial corridor.
