Culbertson, MT

Culbertson is a Roosevelt County town in northeastern Montana, twenty-three miles west of the North Dakota line and about sixty miles south of Canada. The Missouri River runs nearby, giving the town access to fishing, wildlife, and the broad river country of the MonDak region. Culbertson took shape in June 1887 after the Great Northern Railway arrived, and it was named for Alexander Culbertson, a fur-trade leader associated with nearby Fort Union. The railroad put a new settlement on a much older travel corridor.

Culbertson School District 17-C serves students from kindergarten through twelfth grade, keeping the school at the center of local life. Farmers, ranchers, and business owners make up the town's working network, while the Missouri River and nearby hunting areas supply the outdoor side of the community. Town council meetings, utility work, school activities, and regional roads give Culbertson its practical rhythm. The place sits close to two national borders but feels tied to the river and the farms around it. Culbertson is a railroad town with a fur-trade namesake, a K-12 school, and a frontier map that still reaches in every direction.
