Cumberland Head, NY

Cumberland Head is a peninsula of the Town of Plattsburgh projecting into Lake Champlain. The 2020 census counted 1,735 residents. The CDP includes Rocky Point and Champlain Park, with the lake doing most of the neighborhood organizing. At the southern end, a ferry landing connects the peninsula with Gordon Landing on Grand Isle, Vermont, giving Cumberland Head a role in the cross-lake trip as well as the local shoreline map. The ferry and park make the peninsula easy to read from the lake on any map.

At the north end, Cumberland Bay State Park brings a broad sand beach, picnic grounds, campsites, playing fields, and the seasonal activity of a lakeside park. Beekmantown Central School District serves the CDP, while the ferry keeps the southern end pointed toward Vermont. Cumberland Head is easy to picture as a long piece of land with two strong public faces: park at one end, ferry at the other, and a string of lake communities between them.
