Curlew Lake, WA

Curlew Lake is a Ferry County CDP wrapped around a long lake northeast of Republic, in a high valley shaped by Ice Age glaciers. Curlew Creek drains the lake toward the Kettle River, while kame terraces and kettle depressions give the surrounding land its uneven profile. The lake and valley are within the traditional territory of Interior Salish-speaking Indigenous peoples, including the ancestors of today’s Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. The area was included in the 1872 reservation, then removed from the reservation in 1892 after gold prospecting intensified, a change that still belongs in the local history.

Curlew Lake State Park opened for camping, swimming, and boat launching in 1960. Farms, residences, vacation homes, the Ferry County Airport, and private lake businesses share the basin with public recreation. Fishing remains a major draw, with kokanee, bass, perch, and trout shaping the lake’s seasonal use. Residents live with water levels, wildfire weather, tourism, and long drives to Republic for many services. Curlew Lake is a recreation destination, but it is also a lived-in landscape where old land decisions, current homes, a county airport, and Indigenous history meet around the shoreline.
