About Custer
Custer is a Whatcom County CDP named in 1886 for Albert W. Custer, an early settler who ran the first store and served as postmaster. The community's school history starts soon after: Custer had its own school district by 1891, and the current school building dates from 1936, later becoming part of the Ferndale School District. That gives Custer a useful local outline even though the place has little standalone history to shout about: a name tied to a storekeeper, a schoolhouse that stayed in service, and a rural corner of Whatcom County. The quick read is post office, school, and Albert Custer's name - not the famous general.
