Dakota, MN

Dakota is a Winona County city of 295 people at the 2020 census, between Winona and La Crosse along Interstate 90. U.S. 61 and U.S. 14 briefly share the interstate here, while Winona County Road 12 and the Apple Blossom Scenic Drive provide smaller-scale routes. The city sits at the meeting of Dakota Creek and the Mississippi River, with Great River Bluffs State Park nearby and Winona 18 miles north, La Crosse 11 miles south.

The local economy has shifted with the landscape. Dakota was laid out in 1855, developed in 1859 by Nathan Brown, and once centered on berry growing; apple growing is now the main industry. Brown also operated a stockyard and ferry service to Wisconsin, an early reminder that the river was a working route as well as a geographic boundary. Incorporated on May 23, 1951, Dakota keeps that layered map: interstate traffic above the valley, orchards and scenic roads around town, and the Mississippi and bluffs shaping the horizon.
