Dale, IN

Dale is a Spencer County town with an old name change at its center. Laid out as Elizabeth in 1843, it became Dale when the post office took the name of Robert Dale Owen, the New Harmony reformer and congressman. That connection points west toward the Ohio River country, but Dale’s own setting is Carter Township, where roads run through the farm country around the town. The town is small enough that those names still feel tied to the same regional map.

The local map still has the pieces you’d expect to use rather than admire from a distance: town parks, a community center with gym and weight room, and David Turnham Elementary in the North Spencer school system. The Dale branch of Lincoln Heritage Public Library has its own long civic story; a volunteer library began in 1938, and the present library district grew out of that work. Dale feels like a place held together by school, recreation, and a library that knows its service area.
