Dalmatia, PA

Dalmatia is a census-designated place located in Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County in the state of Pennsylvania. The 2010 census counted 488 residents. The community is located along Pennsylvania Route 147 in southwestern Northumberland County, along the Susquehanna River. The community was initially called founded in 1798 under the name " Georgetown " before being renamed " Dalmatia " after the historical region of Dalmatia located in contemporary Croatia. The short version is that Dalmatia carries an earlier story into the places people know and use now. That is the local read on Dalmatia: its past remains attached to the places people use now. The change seems to have been caused by an attempt of the U.S. Postal Services to establish a post office in the year 1817, which failed due to the fact that the name "Georgetown" was too common.
