Danforth, IL

Danforth is a village in Danforth Township, Iroquois County, laid out in 1872 when the railroad was extended south through the prairie. George M. Danforth, the village's founder, supplied the name, and the first community grew around farmers, their families, and the businesses that followed the tracks. That origin still shapes the place: Danforth is a small grid of homes and streets set in broad agricultural country, with the railroad corridor and US 45 giving the village its practical north-south orientation.

US 45 runs through the center of town, four miles north to Ashkum and four miles south to Gilman. Those short distances matter in a rural county, where the nearest town often determines errands, school routes, and where people meet for supplies or a meal. Danforth's story is the classic Illinois railroad settlement, but the details make it local: a founder's name, a township that shares it, and a main road that still follows the same basic line of movement. The village had 594 residents in 2020, enough to keep that older pattern visible in the landscape without turning Danforth into anything other than the small Iroquois County place it has always been.
