Daniel, WY

Daniel is a Sublette County census-designated place in the Green River valley, where U.S. Route 189 runs between the Gros Ventre Range to the north and the Wind River Range to the east. Horse Creek joins the Green River just west of the community, and the surrounding basin opens toward the Salt River Range. The mountain frame is close on three sides, giving Daniel a strong western Wyoming geography even before the town name appears on a map.

On July 5, 1840, Jesuit missionary Pierre-Jean De Smet celebrated what is recognized as the first Catholic Mass in the area now called Wyoming at a Green River rendezvous near Horse Creek. A monument marks the site about a mile east of Daniel, while the old Daniel schoolhouse stands between the river and creek. Sublette County School District No. 1 serves local students. Daniel's story joins mountain routes, a river crossing, an early rendezvous, and a small school community in one high basin.
