About Jackson

Jackson is Teton County’s only incorporated municipality and its county seat, occupying the Jackson Hole valley between the Teton and Gros Ventre ranges. The town and valley are often conflated in name, but Jackson Hole properly refers to the valley, which was named for mountain man David Edward Jackson. The population was 10,760 in 2020 and was estimated at 10,680 in 2024. Flat Creek, a Snake River tributary, passes through town at an elevation of about 6,237 feet. Grand Teton National Park begins roughly five miles away, while Jackson also serves as a gateway to Yellowstone. Nearby Snow King, Jackson Hole Mountain, and Grand Targhee ski areas support a tourism economy concentrated around the town square.
