Jackson, WY

To get the geography straight, Jackson is the actual town, while Jackson Hole refers to the entire 60-mile valley. Surrounded by the Tetons to the west, the Gros Ventre Range to the east, and the National Elk Refuge along the northern border, the town sits in one of the most scenic spots in the country. Because the valley is bordered by protected federal lands and steep mountains, very little private land can be developed, which keeps housing inventory tight and prices high. Many local homes and apartments carry workforce deed restrictions that require owners or renters to work full-time within the county, so it is essential to check those rules carefully before house hunting. Winter also brings practical demands. You will want to budget for heating costs, plan for roof and driveway snow removal, and secure off-street parking, especially since the town bans overnight street parking from November through mid-April to let plows clear the roads.

Tourism, hospitality, and outdoor guiding drive a large part of the economy, but healthcare, education, local government, and construction offer reliable year-round careers. Getting around town without a car is surprisingly easy compared to most mountain towns. The local START bus is free within town limits, and a wide network of paved pathways makes biking to work or running errands simple during the warmer months. Commuting during peak seasons requires some patience. Winter storms, heavy visitor traffic, and wildlife on the roads can quickly slow down travel, particularly for anyone commuting over the pass from Idaho or through the canyon from Star Valley.

Everyday life in Jackson balances resort amenities with small-town roots. Town Square, known for its massive elk-antler arches, serves as the community hub for farmers markets, seasonal celebrations, and winter ice skating. Snow King Mountain rises straight up from the edge of downtown, giving residents a local ski hill and hiking trails right in their backyard. A few blocks away, the Center for the Arts hosts concerts, film screenings, and community classes throughout the year. Visitors keep downtown lively, while locals build their daily routines around the county library, the recreation center, and the trailheads scattered around the edge of town.
