Dannemora, NY

Dannemora is a Clinton County village divided between the towns of Dannemora and Saranac, at the western edge of the Adirondacks. The 2020 census counted 3,287 residents. Permanent settlement began in 1838, the village incorporated in 1901, and the name came from Dannemora, Sweden, an iron-making town connected to some early settlers. The village's identity, though, is dominated by Clinton Correctional Facility, the high-security prison that locals and outsiders often simply call Dannemora. The village sits inside Adirondack Park, while the portion in the Town of Dannemora that contains the prison is excluded from the park by law.

That odd boundary is part of the local map, along with the old prison complex and the Village Museum, which keeps local artifacts and correctional-facility history. The mountain setting and institutional footprint sit side by side, giving Dannemora a character unlike a conventional Adirondack hamlet.
