Darby, MT

Darby sits at the southern end of Montana's Bitterroot Valley, between the Bitterroot Range and Sapphire Mountains and close to the Idaho line. Darby was officially established in 1889, when the place was tied to the Northern Pacific's Bitterroot Valley branch and took the name of James W. Darby. That older transport and timber-country setting still shows up in local institutions. The Darby Ranger Station Museum occupies a former Civilian Conservation Corps station built in 1937–39; it later served as classrooms and a hotshot-crew building before restoration. Its exhibits trace the Forest Service presence that shaped the valley.

Today, the Bitterroot River runs beside town, with fly fishing, parks, a skatepark, and a trail system folded into the local map. The library is another piece of the town's recent history: the present roundwood building replaced a small log library after the 2000 wildfires. Darby K–12 schools, the Pioneer Memorial Museum, and the ranger station give the town a civic and historical core, while the river and surrounding national-forest country keep the larger valley close at hand.
