Dawson, TX

Dawson is a Navarro County town about 21 miles southwest of Corsicana and roughly 50 miles south of Dallas. It was established in 1847 as the county’s second town, taking its name from Britton Dawson, a cattle rancher who came to Texas looking for grass and water. The place changed pace after the Cotton Belt railroad reached it in 1881, turning Dawson into a supply and shipping center for nearby farms.

The early town had the pieces you would expect from that role: a post office by 1882, stores, a lumberyard, and eventually cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill. Dawson Independent School District is still one of the clearest pieces of the local map, with elementary, junior high, and high school campuses serving Dawson and nearby Purdon.
