Dayton, IA

Dayton is a city in Webster County, Iowa, with 772 residents at the 2020 census. A post office has served the place since 1877, and the city took its name from Dayton, Ohio. The local calendar has one unusually large date: the Dayton Rodeo began in 1937 with three young cowboys, moved to Oak Park on the south edge of town in 1955, and now fills four Labor Day weekend performances under Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association sanction. The rodeo brings a carnival, flea market, and Labor Day parade along with the arena competition.

The four performances draw more than 10,000 spectators, giving Dayton a regional reach well beyond its size. The city's everyday map is smaller and more familiar: Dayton Elementary is part of Southeast Valley Community School District, with the middle school in Burnside and high school in Gowrie. Farmers markets run from May through September, and Oak Park hosts Old Engine Day and other gatherings. Library programs and seasonal holiday events fill out the rest of the year. Dayton's streets connect a school-centered town to a rodeo ground that becomes a regional meeting place every Labor Day.
