Dayton, ID

Dayton sits on the west side of Cache Valley where Five Mile Creek comes down from the Bannock Mountains. The town began in 1867, when Joseph Chadwick and his family built a log cabin near the creek; one room doubled as a supply store for settlers and freighters. That early location still gives Dayton its feel: a small community set between open valley ground and mountain slopes, with the seasons arriving in full—hot summers, snowy winters, and sharp changes between them. Franklin County places Dayton about five miles from Preston, a reminder of the old settlement pattern that helped shape the west side of the valley.

Today the old story is easiest to pick up at Dayton City Park and in the surrounding historic landscape, where Five Mile Creek and the mountains give local errands a visible backdrop. Roads lead from town toward Preston, Weston, and the canyons west of the valley, so a short drive can move from open farm ground to steep country. Dayton is a place for noticing small markers: a creek that gave the settlement its first name, a town park built generations after the first cabin, and the same mountain edge that made this spot useful to travelers in the first place.
