De Beque, CO

De Beque is a Mesa County statutory town with 493 residents in the 2020 census, about 25 miles northeast of Grand Junction. It sits on the north side of the Colorado River in a ranching valley upstream from De Beque Canyon, across the river from Interstate 70. The town’s small grid holds a historic downtown with town hall, tavern, and commercial buildings, along with homes, churches, and a school. Grand Mesa and the Book Cliffs frame the valley, while the river supplies irrigation for agriculture and cattle.

De Beque’s modern economy carries several older layers. Cattle ranching dominated for decades; energy production rose in the 1920s, and the town now names energy, agriculture, and recreation among its principal sectors. The community was founded in 1884 in a region long occupied by the Ute people, with white settlement arriving around 1880. The historic downtown keeps the civic scale compact, while Interstate 70 runs on the opposite side of the river and Grand Junction supplies the larger regional center.
