About De Kalb
De Kalb is a small city in southwest Buchanan County, Missouri, in the St. Joseph area. Its story starts under another name: the place was laid out as Bloomington in 1839, then renamed in 1851 for Johann von Robais, Baron de Kalb, a major general in the American Revolution. A post office has operated under De Kalb since 1840. The 2020 census counted 233 residents, so the town's name carries a larger historical figure than its present footprint.
The local map is mostly a school-and-road map. Buchanan County R-IV serves the community, while the surrounding county opens toward St. Joseph and the Missouri countryside. De Kalb's history sits in its name and in the long continuity of its post office: Bloomington became De Kalb, but the place stayed in the same southwest Buchanan County setting. It is the kind of small Missouri city where a name change from the nineteenth century still does most of the historical heavy lifting, and where the school district and nearby regional routes connect a few hundred residents to the larger northwest Missouri map.
