De Soto, IL

De Soto is a Jackson County village in Southern Illinois, six miles from Carbondale and Southern Illinois University. The Illinois Central Railroad brought the village into being in the 1850s, when its wood yard mattered to steam locomotives; a post office followed in 1855. The name honors Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, and coal mining later joined the railroad as an important local industry. U.S. 51 and Illinois 149 connect the village with Carbondale, Du Quoin, Murphysboro, and the rest of the county. The 2020 census counted 1,407 residents.

De Soto has rebuilt after hard blows. Fires damaged the village after the Civil War and again in 1891, and the 1925 Tri-State Tornado destroyed much of town, including the two-story school building. The present community map includes a K-8 school, churches, Township Fire Protection District, Little League, Veteran's Memorial, and two parks. DeSoto Community Park has ball fields, picnic shelters, basketball courts, and a playground; Senior Citizens' Park sits half a block from downtown. Lakes and state parks nearby add the outdoor side of the local orbit.
